How it's worked out
fixed per mile = fixed costs per month ÷ miles per month fuel per mile = diesel price ÷ miles per gallon variable per mile = driver pay + fuel + maintenance + tolls and other cost per mile = fixed per mile + variable per mile
What goes in fixed costs
Anything you pay whether the truck moves or not: truck and trailer payments or lease, insurance, permits and registration, ELD and software, and your share of office overhead.
Count every mile
Use total miles, loaded and empty. Deadhead burns fuel and wears the truck the same as a loaded mile.
Per truck or per fleet
Run it once per truck to find the expensive one, then once for the fleet to price loads.
Want it by truck, driver and lane?
The cost-per-mile review builds this from your own books and fuel data, with a written report and a spreadsheet model.
